H1N1 Information
Flu Precautions:
Parents should be mindful, as school begins, of the recommended precautions that should be taken in light of the H1N1 virus (swine flu). Families should ensure that children have received all recommended immunizations. To help contain the spread of the H1N1 virus, it is important to limit contact with others and to stay home from school or work when certain symptoms appear, including fever, cough, sore throat, headache, chills, fatigue, and body aches. Parents should plan now how to manage if a student is home with the flu for several days during the school year. Families should also remind children of the importance of hand washing and covering the mouth when coughing or sneezing. The health and safety of all students and staff is always of the utmost importance.
Proper Handwashing
Healthy Reminder: It is that time of year when germs are spreading like crazy and we need to remind ourselves and our kids how to try and keep the germs at bay. Hand washing is the first line of defense against germs. A few seconds of hand washing several times a day can prevent days of illness. The following guidelines are the best way to properly wash hands and avoid spreading germs and illnesses:

-         Wash hands in warm water – not too hot or cold.
-         Use soap and lather up the entire hand up past the wrist and between fingers for 10-15 seconds or tell the kids to sing their ABCs.
-         Rinse and dry the hands with a clean towel and use that towel to turn off the faucet

TDap Boosters for 6th Grade!!
According to the Prince William County Schools’ regulation #755-1, all students entering the 6th grade must have a Tdap booster before entering middle school in September. This requirement applies to all students that are 11years old and if at least five years have passed since receiving the last dose of tetanus-containing vaccine.

If your child has already received the booster, please send me a copy of the record so it can be added to your child’s file.  Please be advised that students will not be allowed to enter middle school without documentation of this immunization.

School exclusion citeria:
Please remember that according to the PWCS regulation #758-1, children must remain home from school for at least 24 hours if they have a fever of 100.0 degrees or higher and for 24 hours after an episode of vomitting or diarrhea.  If your child has strep throat, he/she must be on antibiotics for at least 24 hours before returning to school.  By complying with this regulation, this will help us maintain a healthier environment for everyone at school.  We want to assure you that the entire building is being cleaned by our custodial staff on a regular basis with a school approved disinfectant.
Clinic Information
Parents will be notified if a child is seen frequently in the clinic with minor complaints of illness or injury that tend to be chronic and keep the student out of class.

Thank you for your cooperation in helping to keep our children healthy. We all want to minimize the number of days that your children miss school and provide a healthy environment conducive to learning.
